WM frequently routes customers according to their service address, municipality, account type, and requested service. The telephone number printed on the customer’s invoice or displayed after signing in to My WM may be more appropriate than a general number.

800-796-9696 is commonly listed for WM Customer Care. The older 866-909-4458 number continues to appear in some municipal service information and older WM listings. If either number does not correctly route the call, use the official WM Support Center or the contact information associated with the service address.

How to File and Escalate a Waste Management Complaint

Waste Management complaints should ordinarily begin with the local WM service team responsible for the customer’s account. The Houston headquarters may not have access to local routes, municipal schedules, driver records, container orders, or account-specific billing systems.

  1. Sign in to My WM. Review the service address, account number, balance, pickup schedule, open requests, and recent account activity.
  2. Select the correct support topic. WM provides separate help for billing, payments, missed pickups, schedule questions, containers, account access, service changes, and cancellations.
  3. Document the problem. Save invoices, photographs, service dates, chat transcripts, emails, payment confirmations, and earlier case numbers.
  4. State the requested resolution. Explain whether you need a missed pickup completed, fee removed, invoice corrected, container repaired, service canceled, payment located, or account reviewed.
  5. Request a ticket or reference number. Record the representative’s name, date, promised action, and expected response time.
  6. Request escalation. If the first representative cannot resolve the complaint, ask for a supervisor or local service-team review.
  7. Continue through the existing case. Reference the original ticket when following up instead of creating unrelated requests for the same problem.
  8. Check the service agreement or municipal contract. Billing, cancellation, container-removal, and dispute procedures can differ by location and account type.
  9. Use written corporate correspondence when appropriate. Mail copies rather than original documents and retain delivery confirmation.

What to Include in a WM Complaint

  • Customer and account number, shared privately
  • Complete service address
  • Residential, commercial, industrial, or municipal account type
  • Date and type of missed or disputed service
  • Container type and size
  • Invoice date and disputed amount
  • Payment date and confirmation number
  • Previous ticket or support-request numbers
  • Photographs when relevant
  • The specific resolution requested

Do not publish complete account numbers, invoice numbers, payment-card details, bank information, login credentials, home addresses, private telephone numbers, personal email addresses, gate codes, or employee personal information in a public review.

WM Missed Pickups and Service Problems

Common residential and commercial service concerns include:

  • Trash, recycling, yard waste, or bulk items not collected
  • A collection reported as completed when material remains
  • A delayed roll-off dumpster delivery or removal
  • A damaged, missing, or incorrectly sized container
  • Repeated schedule changes
  • Waste left behind after collection
  • A blocked or inaccessible container
  • Service interrupted because of weather, holidays, road conditions, or account status

Before reporting a missed pickup, confirm the scheduled collection day, holiday changes, container placement rules, acceptable materials, account status, and required set-out time. Some municipalities establish their own schedules and collection requirements even when WM performs the service.

Take a time-stamped photograph showing that the container was placed correctly and was accessible. Report the missed collection through the WM Support Center and request a ticket number and estimated recovery date.

If repeated pickups are missed, maintain a service log containing each scheduled date, report date, ticket number, WM response, and whether collection ultimately occurred. Commercial customers should also preserve photographs showing any operational, access, sanitation, or safety consequences.

Waste Management Billing, Charges, and Payment Complaints

WM billing complaints may involve:

  • A rate increase or service-price adjustment
  • Fuel, environmental, administrative, delivery, removal, or other fees
  • A payment that was not credited correctly
  • Autopay or paperless-billing problems
  • Charges for a missed or disputed service
  • Container-delivery or removal charges
  • Late fees or a service interruption
  • A credit or refund that has not appeared
  • Charges continuing after a cancellation request

Compare the disputed invoice with the prior invoice, service agreement, renewal notice, municipal rate schedule, and payment records. Ask WM to identify the service period, base rate, taxes, adjustments, and each separate fee.

The WM billing help section provides information about invoices, payment methods, autopay, and account management. My WM may also show current and past invoices, balances, payment activity, and account notices.

If a payment is missing, provide WM with the payment date, amount, payment method, confirmation number, and the last four digits of the payment account. Do not send complete card or bank-account information through public comments or unverified email addresses.

Canceling Waste Management Service

Cancellation procedures can differ for residential, commercial, temporary, municipal, and contract-based accounts. Customers should review the applicable service agreement before canceling because advance notice, contract terms, container-removal charges, final invoices, or other conditions may apply.

WM provides online instructions for canceling one-time or recurring service. Depending on the service, cancellation may be available through My WM or may require contact with a support agent.

When canceling:

  • Record the cancellation date and confirmation number
  • Ask for the effective service-ending date
  • Confirm the final scheduled pickup
  • Ask when and how WM will retrieve its container
  • Request an explanation of any removal or termination charge
  • Turn off autopay only after accounting for legitimate final charges
  • Save the final invoice and proof of payment
  • Request written confirmation that the account is closed

Do not assume that stopping payment automatically cancels the underlying service agreement. An unpaid balance may remain disputed or may be referred for collection even if automatic payments have been disabled.

Commercial, Municipal, and Contracted WM Service

Commercial customers should review the service agreement for collection frequency, container size, contamination rules, access requirements, price adjustments, renewal provisions, cancellation notice, and dispute procedures.

If a commercial container is not serviced, document whether:

  • The gate or enclosure was accessible
  • Vehicles or other objects blocked the container
  • The container was overloaded or contained prohibited materials
  • The problem affected one pickup or occurred repeatedly
  • WM assessed a return-trip or extra-service charge

Residents whose WM service is arranged through a city, county, homeowners association, apartment community, or property manager may need to contact that organization as well as WM. The contracting organization may control rates, service levels, collection days, bulk-pickup rules, and complaint escalation.

For recurring municipal service failures, retain WM ticket numbers and provide them to the local government or other contracting organization. This helps distinguish a documented service problem from a general complaint.

Waste Management Human Resources, Employment Verification, and Careers

The 713-512-6200 headquarters number should not be described as a dedicated Waste Management Human Resources line.

WM publishes the following contact information for former employees:

WM identifies the HR Service Center as a contact for address changes, pay-related questions, tax-related questions, and employment verification. The same published number is also used for former-employee benefits or insurance assistance.

Job seekers should search and apply through WM Careers. WM warns applicants that legitimate recruiting communication will come from an @wm.com email address. Applicants should be cautious about unsolicited job offers, requests for money, checks sent for equipment purchases, or demands for banking information.

Current employees should use the internal HR, payroll, benefits, safety, ethics, leave, or employment-verification resources provided by WM. Customer-service agents may not have access to confidential employment records.

Waste Management Disappointing Cancelation Issue

April 8, 2025

Waste Management, Difficulty canceling service. I could not find a way to cancel service by email or online, so I canceled via chat. This was more than 2 weeks ago. Since then, I have received another bill pay reminder by email which tells me the cancellation has not been processed. Also, Waste Management has not contacted me regarding when they will pick up their containers. I tried canceling by phone, but after a wait time of 20 minutes I gave up. I am currently on the phone now to try to get this resolved and I have been on hold for 20 minutes again. Waste Management, seems to deliberately make it difficult to cancel service. You make it very difficult to actually speak to a person on the phone.
