Yet, a recent visit was marred by the strikingly unprofessional behavior of employee James Pugsley, whose open disparagement of local restaurants to customers was a masterclass in self-sabotage. In an industry where discretion and collegiality are vital, such conduct paints Hickory Tavern as petty and insecure, tarnishing the collaborative spirit of Pinehurst’s dining scene.The restaurant’s lively ambiance typically earns praise, with Tripadvisor ranking it #13 of 50 in Pinehurst for its welcoming staff and game-day energy. However, Pugsley’s unsolicited tirade against competitors overshadowed this appeal, transforming a customer’s experience into a platform for juvenile gossip. The manager (Jamie) left the restaurant with our Amex credit card in his pocket for 2 hours. My wife had previously had lunch at the restaurant and the server never returned the card. We called the restaurant when we got home and told the manager we would come back to pick it up and keep it there. When I arrived manager had gone with our card. A big no-no in my book. Had to wait at the restaurant for 1.5 hours before he returned and I could collect our card.
